Understanding SAP Databricks

SAP Databricks is a native service within SAP Business Data Cloud that integrates Databricks’ leading capabilities in AI, data warehousing, data engineering, and governance. Utilizing a zero-copy approach through Delta Sharing, it eliminates the need for traditional data integration methods, allowing customers to access their SAP data with rich semantic context and combine it with other data sources to develop comprehensive enterprise solutions.

The True Real Impact – Transforming Real-time Access to SAP Data

Until recently, accessing SAP data in real-time posed significant challenges for customers transitioning from SAP Enterprise HANA or  SAP BW/HANA to run advanced analytics workloads. The methods often forced businesses to rely heavily on third-party ingestion tools to manage data transfer. Although some hyper-scalers provided native connectors, these tools frequently proved inadequate for handling large data volumes, making third-party solutions indispensable.

Consider a major CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) company that struggled to access SAP inventory data from the last five days in real-time. The complexity of the processes involved led to data being available only in near real-timenot true real-time. For users used to report on SAP Enterprise HANA data, these delays are particularly frustrating and unacceptable. Since multiple data processing steps are involved, it leads to reliability issues, necessitating the creation of a data reconciliation process to maintain data accuracy.

Such scenarios are emblematic of a widespread problem—companies invest heavily in third-party tools and training, yet often fall short of achieving true real-time data access. The lack of real-time data access has notable repercussions for AI and ML capabilities. Without real-time data, predictive models can only work with outdated information, reducing their accuracy and effectiveness. This leads to less reliable forecasts and insights, which can hinder decision-making processes and slow responses to market changes. Advanced analytics requires timely data to train models effectively, adapt to new information, and provide meaningful insights, something that was previously challenging to achieve.

However, the landscape is now shifting. With Databricks’ introduction of zero-copy integration, businesses can access real-time data seamlessly and accurately. This advancement eliminates the previous complexities associated with data ingestion, simultaneously reducing costs and efforts. The collaboration between SAP and Databricks not only aligns with SAP’s ethos of “bringing out the best in every business” but also significantly enhances AI and ML capabilities by providing immediate access to actionable data.

“SAP BDC is the innovative key unlocking SAP data in partnership with Databricks, saving time and effort while delivering unmatched business value, value, value!”
