THE CHALLENGE
Discount Tire’s legacy Matillion and Redshift stack was built around a rigid, drag-and-drop ETL tool that couldn’t keep pace with the company’s advanced analytics ambitions. After a platform bake-off between Snowflake and Databricks, Discount Tire chose Databricks and needed a partner who could help migrate their entire environment without slowing the business down.
THE SOLUTION
Lovelytics led a two-phase migration: first establishing standing up new sales tables for quick wins, then executing the full Matillion and Redshift to Databricks migration using Lovelytics’s AI-powered conversion accelerator that translated legacy components into Databricks notebooks, compressing a migration Discount Tire expected to take one to two years into six months.
THE FULL STORY
Lovelytics first crossed paths with Discount Tire in March 2025 at Databricks’ Data + AI Summit, where the two teams sat down together and quickly aligned on a shared vision: get Discount Tire off Redshift and onto Databricks.
The vision wasn’t the hard part, hitting Discount Tire’s timeline and budget while doing it was.
So the teams got creative over drinks in a Marriott lounge, mapping out every option that could compress the timeline and trim scope without compromising the migration itself. That conversation kicked off a couple months of fine-tuning, and the two teams landed on a scoped approach: migrate the Bronze and Gold layers only, a leaner path to the same destination.
At the same time, Discount Tire was still weighing its long-term platform between Snowflake and Databricks. As that evaluation played out, Databricks pulled ahead — Unity Catalog stood out as a major value-add, and its clear edge in AI/ML readiness made the direction obvious for a company thinking about where its data strategy needed to go next.
Once that platform decision was locked in, Discount Tire brought Lovelytics on to lead the migration.
A Three-Part Migration: Building a New Enterprise Sales Data Warehouse, Then Migrating at Speed
Part 1: Establish the Foundation. Lovelytics and Discount Tire began by replicating Discount Tire’s legacy Redshift environment on Databricks using Lakehouse Federation. This unlocked data that multiple migration workstreams downstream would depend on. Alongside this, Lovelytics anchored the foundation with an agent-ready, configuration-driven ingestion framework built on Delta Live Tables and Databricks Asset Bundles, turning key integration patterns into scaled, repeatable, governed assets and enabling velocity through CI/CD.
Part 2:Build New Value. In parallel, Lovelytics built net-new enterprise sales tables to support analytics through Discount Tire’s move to a new point-of-sale system. This ended up being a key moment since it was an early, tangible win that showed the business what fast, self-serve insight could look like on the new platform.
Part 3: Execute the Core Migration. With the foundation in place, Lovelytics migrated the full Matillion and Redshift environment to Databricks. Discount Tire was new to both Databricks and Agile delivery, so Lovelytics partnered with the team to build a consistent delivery rhythm, including sprint cadence, delivery checkpoints, and QA discipline needed to run a migration of this scale with confidence.
WHY LOVELYTICS
Discount Tire chose Lovelytics after early, in-person conversations at Databricks Data + AI Summit built genuine trust and a clear understanding of their technical needs. That foundation carried into the engagement itself: Lovelytics invested in a purpose-built AI migration accelerator, tailored specifically to Discount Tire’s existing Matillion patterns, demonstrating a level of partnership beyond a standard migration engagement.
THE RESULTS
Discount Tire completed a migration they’d expected to take one to two years in roughly six months, and left the engagement with a modernized platform, reusable engineering frameworks, and two new data initiatives already underway. The team’s data science group is now building on MLflow, and Databricks Genie has opened data access to parts of the organization that never had it under Redshift.
- Migrated the full Matillion and Redshift environment to Databricks in ~6 months, versus the 1–2 years originally anticipated.
- Reached 85%+ automated conversion accuracy with LL’s AI migration accelerator.
- Established a repeatable Bronze and Silver integration pattern and a standardized QA framework, now reused on other Discount Tire projects.
- Now that their data lives in Databricks, Discount Tire has opened access via Databricks Genie to teams that never had it under Redshift, even earning a shoutout from their CEO at a company-wide all-hands.
- Launched two new data-product initiatives on the platform: a People Care (talent acquisition) project and a Customer Experience (omnichannel) initiative.
- Enabled a one-motion migration from Redshift + MicroStrategy straight to Databricks + Tableau, since replicating the Redshift environment in Databricks meant Discount Tire never had to make an intermediate stop.
WHAT'S NEXT
Discount Tire and Lovelytics are now partnering on a Customer Experience data product (unpacking website traffic and in-store experience data) to better understand the end-to-end customer journey, alongside broader conversations about Discount Tire’s long-term data product operating model.
